biking through wine country on a picture-perfect day
Today took us about 45 minutes away from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s renowned wine regions. The incredible weather and bright blue skies we’d been experiencing held up, perfect for our activity today which was an e-bike tour through the vineyards. I’d never ridden an e-bike (and honestly haven’t ridden a bike at all since I was about in middle school), but was happy that it was really easy to pick up.
We started out at the beautiful Skilpadvlei Wine Estate, where we met our guides from the Bikes n Wines company, and got a quick tutorial on how to handle the speeds and brakes before heading off on our tour.
After riding for a while, we stopped at the Boschkloof Winery for a tasting. The outdoor table they laid out for us was really beautiful, and we sampled their Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet, and Merlot. (…I think. I am not at all a wine person so am making assumptions based on the first four listed on the menu that was at our place setting haha.)
After our first tasting we (carefully 😅) got back on our bikes to head back to Skilpadvlei, where we were treated to another tasting.
After two tastings we were ready for lunch, so got back on the bus to drive to the beautiful Boschendal Estate, a 17th Century Dutch farmstead, where we enjoyed a family-style three-course meal.
Driving back from Stellenbosch in the late afternoon, we had some time to rest at the hotel before going out to dinner to enjoy our last night in Cape Town. To celebrate, we went to a fantastic restaurant with a great atmosphere called Kloof Street House, based on Jamie’s recommendation.
