TRAVEL & DAY ONE

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 – SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2022

The long journey from New York to Cape Town, an early flashpacker introduction, waterfront shopping, and 5-star rejuvenation

Africa is huge. Which makes South Africa, at the bottom tip, waaaaay farther than you think it is from New York City. The longest flight I’d ever taken was a little over seven hours, so this kind of long-haul travel was going to be a very new experience. There is one direct flight from NYC to Cape Town, but it only flies a few days a week (and not the day I needed), so based on a combo of best price and best timing, I ended up booking on Emirates with a connection in Dubai.

After putting in a full Thursday of work, I shut down my computer, grabbed my suitcase, and hopped on the subway to JFK, beyond excited to begin my much-needed vacation! I’d never flown on Emirates before, and never flown on a massive double-decker Airbus 380, so the first-timer experiences started right away.

Practically skipped with joy to the AirTrain

Or a plane this huge

It’s happening!!

Up to the glamorous second level for Business & First class

I have never seen a gate this huge

Emirates’ swanky Business class is ludicrously expensive, but the exit row/extra legroom economy upgrade was totally worth it for this 13-hour flight

Leaving NYC at 11pm, we arrived 12 hours and 45 minutes later in Dubai, at 7:45pm UAE time. The airport was as glitzy and over the top as I expected the Dubai airport to be, though I was shocked at how empty it was at such a reasonable hour when I was expecting such a busy transport hub to be packed with people.

I had an almost 8-hour layover so had considered getting out of the airport to see some of the nighttime spectacles of Dubai, but realized it was going to be 100+ degrees with high humidity, and the thought of sitting on my next long flight as a sweaty mess sounded terrible, so I opted to stay in the airport.

I am lousy at sleeping on planes, and with about 23 hours of flying time I didn’t want to risk being completely sleep-deprived in Cape Town, so I had rented a short-term room at the in-terminal hotel. I explored the airport a little before checking into a lovely room, taking a very welcome shower, and having a solid 4-hour sleep.

You have to show a boarding pass and be in transit to book at the hotel, and I was impressed that the TV in the room showed an updated status for my connecting flight!

Turned out to be the best decision I could’ve made. The Dubai International Hotel stretches over three concourses within the Emirates terminal so I was able to get a room about a 2-minute walk to my next gate, and waltzed right over, refreshed, just as boarding was about to begin for our 3:50am flight to Cape Town.

Finally, after the next 9 hour & 45 minute flight, I had made it to Cape Town! After getting through immigration, I was met by a friendly man with a Flash Pack sign who was ready to walk me to the hired car that would take me to our hotel. I wish I had taken a photo of my enthusiastic driver, who shared an overview of his Xhosa heritage, complete with a lesson in the different kinds of clicks that make up their language, the “what happens in the bush stays in the bush” rituals of becoming a man, and the cow-exchange rules he’d have to follow to get married. (He was sure to let me know that if his future wife cheated, he’d get his cows back.) I’m sure the cow thing is symbolic and has been modernized, but his passion and energy for sharing his culture was infectious, and it was a fabulous intro to South Africa.

After a scenic drive from the airport to our hotel, I was excited to get the adventure started! Arriving at the Radisson Red hotel in the V&A Waterfront district, I ran into Katherine and Harpreet from my group who had coincidentally gotten in at the same time (also arriving a day early before the trip formally started), and after dropping off our suitcases we decided to grab lunch together at Si Cantina Sociale, a casual restaurant next door.

Quickly learned that ordering an iced coffee in South Africa can bring any number of results, including this blended frozen drink haha. To be fair, slushy-style coffee makes sense. And it was delicious.

Before leaving for the trip, I had booked an afternoon massage at a nearby resort spa (and so glad I did!), so after lunch Harps and Katherine headed off to a hop-on hop-off tour bus around Cape Town while I headed in the direction of the resort, by way of the V&A Waterfront shopping & dining district.

I had a little bit of time before my appointment, so wandered around the area before specifically heading to the Watershed, an industrial-style space with a variety of local craft vendors, to knock out some souvenir shopping.

There’s something slightly… Disney World-ish about this waterfront area, with the live entertainment and tons of gift shops, but it’s still really inviting. I can understand why it attracts so many tourists, and I’m glad we were able to stay in such a safe and welcoming neighborhood.

The Watershed was a really nice place to walk around, and I ended up getting some locally made jewelry, as well as a wooden vase from this design company Avoova that makes home decor using broken pieces of ostrich egg. I honestly wanted all of it – just gorgeous. (And definitely had an ohhhhh moment seeing their logo: Avo/ova = bird/egg.)

Seriously beautiful stuff from Avoova! 🥚

After leaving the Watershed, I walked next door to the Cape Town One&Only, an absolutely breathtaking 5-star resort and the home of my spa appointment. Walking in, you’re immediately struck by the lobby and its glass windows that look out to Table Mountain beyond. The resort is surrounded by waterways with beautiful landscaping and foliage, and the spa is located on a little island behind the main building. So picturesque and serene.

I always enjoy doing some sort of locally-inspired spa treatment when I travel, so I opted for the 90-minute “African Journey Experience.” In their brochure, it’s (poetically) described as “A unique proudly South African total body treatment created to prepare your skin for a nourished sunkissed glow, combining scents of sweet orange and baobab oil to uplift your senses. Beginning with a Rooibos and rock salt scrub to encourage radiant skin, flowing into a massage experience with the African Rungu Stick to key areas of tension, ending off with a Rooibos tea ceremony to complete your African Journey, this total indulgence offers the ultimate feel good sensation and fully prepares your body for resort life.” (I love spa brochure copy haha.)

And let me just say, I don’t know if it was that I had just come off of 30 hours of travel, or a particularly grueling several months of work, or if Astrid really was just that good, but it was honestly the best massage of my LIFE. If you find yourself in Cape Town, make time for this spa. 🙌

After the treatment, I sat in their Relaxation Room (not pictured) for a while with some Rooibos tea, enjoying the silence and feeling completely rejuvenated and ready to take on the Flash Pack itinerary.

Image from the spa brochure. Did not realize until now that the Rungu stick, fantastic for a massage, is apparently an East African tribal weapon 😅

FWIW, this was also my introduction to South African pricing. This 5-star treatment at a very luxury resort was about what it would cost in NYC for a basic 60-minute sports massage at a barebones place. Incredible. Bring it on.

I could’ve stayed in that relaxation room for days, but ultimately gathered my stuff and walked back through the V&A Waterfront to the hotel to formally check into my room before meeting up with Harps & Katherine for dinner.

Really loved these artists’ rhinos placed around the district

Our hotel, with Table Mountain behind it

For dinner, the three of us walked back through the waterfront area, found a nice-looking restaurant called Ginja, and had a really lovely dinner with the added bonus of an excellent live musician. A great intro to our South African adventure!

Getting the trip started with some South African wine and gin

He was great, and I wish I had captured more of him! Just always feel weird standing there recording.
